NILE BASIN SEASONAL HYDROLOGICAL OUTLOOK AND ADVISORY JUNE-SEPTEMBER 2026 SEASON

From the publication: "The Nile Basin, spanning eleven riparian countries across northeastern and equatorial Africa, sustains the livelihoods of over 300 million people through its vast network of rivers, lakes, and wetlands. The basin’s hydrological dynamics are profoundly shaped by seasonal climate variability. Particularly the interplay of the East African Rains in March-April-May and October-November-December and the Ethiopian summer monsoon, and the equatorial lake region circulation systems in the period of June–July–August–September (JJAS) season as the most hydrologically significant period of the year within the basin. The JJAS season typically accounts for the majority of annual runoff generated across the Ethiopian Highlands. The highlands are the primary source of floodwaters that propagate downstream through Sudan and Egypt. The Outlook and Flood Advisory for the JJAS 2026 season has been prepared to provide timely, evidence-based climatic and hydrological intelligence to national meteorological and hydrological services, water resources managers, disaster risk reduction authorities, and humanitarian agencies across the basin.

GERD Long-Term Impact on Sudan Economy

Based on a 20% increase in hydropower and an assumed rapid irrigation expansion timeline, the results show that the GERD could help increase Sudan's accumulated gross domestic product (GDP) by US$47-83 billion over the period 2020-60 (excluding initial investment costs and other GERD negative and positive impacts). The choice of crops in new irrigation schemes is key to increasing Sudan’s macro-economic benefits.

Working for the greater common good through trust and cooperation, collaboration, on the international transboundary river law's foundation of equitable and reasonable use without causing any significant harm is what we promote.
